The farmers market is downtown on Thursdays, so we went down in search for some delicious produce. What did we come back with? Roma tomatoes, brussel sprouts, asparagus, a Boule of sourdough bread, and a huge container of basil.

  • The Eyes Are The Window To The Soul

Evelyn Miller (E.V.) - Artist E.V. and I were really tight for a while. When we became friends back in the Summer of 2010 we had adventures and lunch outings and adventures every Thursday. The year leading up to the Summer of 2011 was our planning and saving time for a road trip out west. After our road trip we fell out of touch a bit. I started a job that kept me from 9-5 leaving no mid-day space, and she started school shortly after. It wasn't until recently, nearly a year later, that we got back in touch. Our Thursdays are lined up again, and new adventures and food outings will take place. Solid. "The eyes are the window to the soul..." In my belief, the eyes offer a sense of truth, passion, and honesty. The start of this project displays dreamers and artists, all studying, producing, or maintaining a creative lifestyle. The continuation of this project will not only contain artists and dreamers, but anyone with aspirations for present and future.

  • Road Home

We've had nice weather this entire trip. Some storm fronts had started to move in during our drive out. Almost like they were waiting for us to leave, which I am okay with. Winds were harsh and seemed to take control of the car at most times. The wind was also kicking up dust and sand which made for some dramatic scenery. We decided to take the back roads for some hours before getting onto the main highway system. That way we could enjoy some more hours along the beauty of Utah, and stop whenever we wanted to photograph. The drive weaves through mountains and canyons with long stretches of flat farm aread that are surrounded by mountains in the horizon, and you go through old run down towns as well.

  • Zion National Park - Morning

Leaving is always the hardest when you've been traveling. This goes for any destination (almost always). With 24 hours of driving to cover in two days, Anna and I packed up early in the the morning. We made sure to stop by the coffeehouse for some bagels and coffee, as neither one of us was going to be cooking breakfast that morning. When we were driving out I had to stop and take a picture. I wasn't going to at first, but every scenic view we passed that I didn't photograph made me feel like I was swelling and about to blow up. After we passed what might have been the last spot for a photo, I slammed on the breaks, shifted into reverse, and took a picture. I couldn't resist, and why should I ;] Goodbye, Zion. Until we see you next.

  • The Narrows - Zion National Park

The Narrows is a slot canyon found in the Northern part of Zion canyon. It was rated #5 in the National Geographic ranking of Americas Best 100 Adventures. Reaching The Narrows starts at the end of a mile long river walk in the man area of Zion Canyon. At the end of this river walk, you have the choice to dive right in and start hiking upstream, or turn back in wonder of what's around the bend as you stare down into the canyon. When we hiked the conditions were 38ºF water temps and the stream was moving at 128 cubic feet per second. The temperature alone required a dry suit and layering up in warm clothes underneath. At least a third of the route is done in water. Depending on the water level, it is very possible that you will be up to your chest in water, and at other times, only your knees - thighs. It's been abnormally warm at this time of year, so melting in the North came a bit early, and the river was getting higher as our day at the park went by. We did about 3-4 miles upstream and then turned back. We were losing daylight and temperatures as the sun was starting to set on our way out of the canyon.

  • Birthday Breakfast - Mean Bean Coffee House

On the morning of my birthday, Anna had woken up early and greeted me with wishes of being one year older. With all the good ideas she had to treat me for my birthday, we ended up with this AMAZING breakfast. She found an awesome local coffee shop I had never known about, and suggested we go into town and try it out. Best idea ever (especially since we haven't been eating real meals). This was a great and filling meal to kick off the the birthday, as we were going to be hiking the Bottom-Up route through The Narrows later Website

  • Support Your Independent Coffee House!

When driving to the gateway of Zion National Park through Sprindale, there is this diamond in the rough of a coffee house hiding in a side nook of what looks like a renovated house. Ran and owned by wife and husband, everything is fresh made. Baked goods are from scratch using family recipes, fresh produce is used for meal items, and beverage items consist of locally roasted coffee from Caffe Ibis. I urge any visitors of Zion to visit this coffee shop. Good eats, good treats, and coffee. Nothing better for someone in need of a pick-me-up after a long strenuous hike the night before and spending a night on the rocks ;]

  • Double Arch Alcove - Zion National Park

Double Arch Alcove is the end result of Taylor Creek Trail. It is found in the Northwest section of Zion National Park. If you are staying in the main park area of Zion Canyon, you will have to take a small drive out of town to reach the interstates that goes up to this section of the park. Round-trip, the trail to the Alcove is 5.4 miles. A good moderate hike for anyone planning a day hike out there.

  • Angels Landing - Zion National Park

It is a 5 mile round trip trail to the top of Angels Landing that climbs 1520 feet, and ends at a summit of 5,785 feet. Before climbing, the NPS warns you that high winds and slippery surfaces are but a few of the dangers you may encounter. There have been 5 fatalities from falling, and possibly more. However, fatality numbers are higher in other areas of the park that appear to be safer. This is one of the best views looking into Zion Canyon that was well worth the 3 - 4 hours we spent going through steep inclines and navigating narrow trail ridges Extra photos... On the trail: 1 2 3 Brave Chipmunks: 1 Clif Bar on a cliff: 1

  • Burning Peaks - Sunset at Zion National Park

When we arrived at Zion National Park it was early evening. Once we were settled in there wasn't really enough time to take a hike, so we instead took a scenic drive. On our way back from the drive we were graced with this gorgeous sunset. One thing about Zion is that you have never seen it all. The seasons, the weather, the light, all of it contributes to the beauty of the park, and is constantly changing day by day. We were always finding things on the same drive we had never seen previous. It's really an amazing place. You could be in a desert part of the canyon one day and be hiking up stream the next.

  • Sunset - Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Good Evening, Mittens (all the Buttes have names here). Monument Valley is a large desert valley with clusters of large sandstone buttes found through the area. It is located within Navajo Nation, which is the largest land area assigned to a Native American jurisdiction (27,425 square miles).

  • The Drive Through Mesa Verde

High peaks in Mesa Verde. The highest being 8,572 feet.

  • Pueblo Homes - Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park was created in 1906 to protect some of the best preserved cliff dwelling in the world, which were built by Puebloan people (also known as the Anasazi). The Puebloan people inhabited Mesa Verde between AD 550 - 1300. It wasn't until the 12th century that they started building cliff dwellings. Unfortunately, the section shown in this photo was closed for the winter season, so there was no way of getting down there. We had to be on a cliff opposite from the palace in order to see it. The best I could do.

  • Hole N" The Rock - Moab, Utah

Hole N" The Rock is a 5,000 square foot home carved into the rock over a 12 year period of time. After the death of it's creator, Albert Christensen,it was taken on by Gladys Christensen, and the property was further developed as an attraction, trading post, gift shop, park (it even has a zoo), etcetera. Hole N" The Rock has it's own charm about it. They even have a Ms. PacMan machine under a sheltered area available for play. Let's not forget the sign that points in every which direction saying how many miles it is to the next city. Albert passed away in 1957, and Gladys in 1974. They are both laid to rest in a small cove within the rock. More info on their website:

  • A Night Under The Stars - Arches National Park

The first park we visit was Arches. We got our backcountry permit for the night and hiked out to Delicate Arch planning on some night photos at that location. It's only 1.5mi one way, and upon arrival we continued north around a bend and set up camp out of site and away from the arch to wait for nightfall. Once the stars came full swing we took some shots at the campsite and took a small hike back around the bend to Delicate Arch. Delicate Arch Photo Fail Thought I'd give it a try. Some other photographers came after us and tried taking the same kind of shots. Maybe they better luck with it. If you see any constellations or stars, do 'note' it. I have a terrible time finding this stuff. - B

  • Still alive! Oh, and 22 years of age now.

I've been absent, and I miss sharing pixels and grains with you all. Where I'm at: Angels Landing, Zion National Park - Springdale, Utah. Anna and I have been traveling around out West. I'm working hard to bring back some stunning views in the Western United States. We are hiking The Narrows at Zion National Park. Stay tuned for more photos! Heading back to Minnesota tomorrow night. Birthday images, Zion Narrows, and much much more to come. - B
