Who, I am: Bryant Scannell
What, I am: A self taught Freelance Photographer that observes and captures life through a lens.
I've been behind the barricade doing concert photography, I've documented the streets of minneapolis, I've worked from a surreal place in my mind and created my own scenarios, I've done food photography, and taking senior portraits, I've been published multiple times. I like to stay busy ;]
When, did I: Winter 2005. Making big money at Burger King, I bought my first camera: Fujifilm Finepix. I started by taking a lot of photos involving nature. I would venture through farm fields, the nearby wood area, rivers, lakes, you name it. I wouldn't go anywhere without my camera. When I finally started shooting the human subject, my best friend at the time was there to help. Come Summer of 2006, I would get my first Canon EOS: Rebel XT. I could never afford it myself, but my mother (being the awesome person she is), must have seen some kind of potential and thought it a good investment, so we each invested half. I have never been more thankful. Not only did it keep me out of trouble, but it gave me direction in life. Life through a lens showed me a world waiting to be captured. All these moving pictures just waiting to be frozen and put on display. For a while I worked with the fine arts basing my ideas around dreamstates. These, dreamstates, were reproductions of my own mind, and my hope to make people ask questions and/or feel a sense of wonder. Over the years the scale tipped more in favor of a theme we all know and can relate to: Life. In 2010, I made the decision to get a full frame EOS and go for the Canon 5D (not being able to affork the MII). To this day, that is what I shoot with. It goes with me everywhere, waiting to capture the surrounding events.
Presently, my interests lie strongly in Photojournalism. I've always had an emotional attachment to National Geographic work, specifically dealing with cultural and environmental relationships around the world. The power of an image can be overwhelming, and it is my hope to tell stories and shed some light on what is going on in the international community, beyond the bubble and comfort of daily life. With this in mind, I would like to return for an education in Global Studies to pair with my love of photography.
Where, I am: I am based out of the surrounding Minneapolis, MN Metro area. I jump ship every now and then and like to explore the Western United States to do some hiking, camping, and photograph the wonders and beauty this planet called, Earth, has to offer us.
Why, do I: I have two ways to answer this...
Simple: To strike an emotion.
Complicated: I recently had someone ask me, "what does food have anything to do with the firefighters?" Well, "absolutely nothing," I said. Emotionally, that was a powerful event that I needed to document and share. So I did. I also love to cook. So, I do a little food photography here and there and like to give write ups about the dish. I also delve into concert photography, and more commercial work as well. Lately, my life has been the documentary work I've been doing. I'm all over the board with what I do because simply, I love to photograph. If I were overseas shooting, yes, there would be more of what my primary interests are, but that wouldn't keep me from shooting the simplicities of an afternoon meal, or stroll amongst the streets, wherever I may be.
